Dyshidrotic Eczema is a very itchy form of Eczema with lots of fluid filled blisters, which usually appear on the sides of the fingers or feet. At first the blisters appear as tiny beads that can soon join to form a rash the size of a fingernail. These blisters can later on start oozing or weeping. While this condition is not contagious to others, recurrence is common and for many can be chronic. Incidence/Prevalence in the USA is 20/100,000.

Up until fairly recently, dyshidrotic eczema was simply considered a regular form of atopical eczema. The word pompholyx is derived from the Greek word cheiropompholyx, which means "hand and bubble". However, more recently it has been diagnosed as a separate type of eczema, one which primarily affects the hands and feet of those who suffer with it. It can be difficult to treat and there is a high incidence of it returning fairly frequently. Dyshidrotic eczema treatment is similar to other eczema treatments however due to the nature of the eczema it can sometimes be more difficult to keep in check.

Basically, dyshidrotic eczema treatment is two phased. Firstly, treatment focuses on treating the actual eczema and trying to find out what causes or triggers it. The triggers can be very different from person to person which is why it is important to try to understand what causes it to re-surface. It is a very distressing disease for those who suffer with it especially because of the damage it can do to hands and nails. The eczema itself causes small yet deep blisters to form on the hands and feet. These blisters are extremely itchy and when scratched they tend to either become infected or to
cause the surrounding skin to crack which is very painful.

Applying a topical steroid cream can be beneficial however long-term use of these types of creams cause the skin to thin. Thus usually several other Dyshidrotic eczema treatment plans are also recommended. While one Dyshidrotic eczema treatment may work for a while, patients often find that they have to vary the treatments and switch to different treatments from time to time. This holds true for medicated creams that are used and for home treatments of eczema as well. Alternating treatments tend to help the eczema heal faster and reappear less frequently.

Some of the Dyshidrotic eczema treatment recommended uses items that are readily available in the home or can be bought at local stores. For example soaking the hands or feet in a salt bath for 30 to 40 minutes is said to help. Apply vinegar to affected areas will also alleviate some of the itching. Cleaning hands or feet with a baking soda paste is also a very effective Dyshidrotic eczema treatment. Some people have found that spreading a zinc oxide ointment on their skin is also a helpful Dyshidrotic eczema treatment.

If the skin happens to crack; something that is fairly likely to happen if the eczema is not caught and treated soon enough, extra care needs to be taken. Natural moisturizers such as pure olive or coconut oil help. You may find that Aloe Vera gel is also a great and soothing Dyshidrotic eczema treatment. It is important to properly emolliate the skin in order to help restore it back to full health. Once the skin is healthy again care must be taken to ensure that it stays as free from eczema as possible. The best way to do this is to keep the skin well moisturized and to apply medical cream at the first sign of any eczema coming back again.

Stress Causes Eczema

Learn more about the relationship between stress and eczema and see why stress causes eczema to get worse.

Stress is a part of life that is unavoidable, no matter what age you are. There is good stress, which motivates you while there is also bad stress that, well, stresses you out and can give rise to a host of health problems. For those suffering with eczema, too much stress can signal a flare-up or even many flare-ups in a row if the stress is long term. Stress is defined as, "A mentally or emotionally disruptive or upsetting condition occurring in response to adverse external influences and capable of affecting physical health, usually characterized by increased heart rate, a rise in blood pressure, muscular tension, irritability, and depression.”

The good news in all of this is that there are ways to "de-stress” your life and by so doing, see fewer eczema outbreaks. First of, consider your day-to-day life. Are there stressors in your life that don’t need to be there? Are there ways that you can remove clutter from your life that won’t affect the whole of it? Think of what is most important and do away with the small, petty things that cause you stress and headaches.

Next, have a good laugh. Yes, laugh out loud. Watch a comedy, read a funny book, listen or tell a joke or describe a hilarious moment to a family member or friend. Laughter is not only a good outlet for stress but it also has a number of health benefits. Laughter activates the immune system, it lower blood pressure, and it triggers the release of the body’s natural painkillers, endorphins. Laughter also, as previously mentioned, reduces stress hormones, helps reduce pain, allows muscles to relax and is very helpful for the breathing process as frequent bouts of laughter empties air from the lungs.

Find activities to do in your free time that allow you to set aside all of your worries and concerns and cut loose and enjoy yourself! For some people it may be getting together with friends and going to shopping, going to see a movie or browsing at a flea market; for others it might be a game of tennis, squash or an aerobics or yoga class; while still for others it might be an artistic pursuit such as painting, pottery or writing poetry. Even if you just want to relax in an easy chair with a cup of tea and a good book, do it! Finding ways to de-stress your life can help decrease your flare-ups tremendously, not to mention also improving your quality of life.

Keep in mind however that soaking for a long time in the bathtub will only bring more stress to the life of an eczema sufferer. If you find physical activities relaxing make sure to use your common sense. Take breaks, drink water frequently and don’t allow yourself to get too sweaty or overheated. By so doing you defeat your purpose and can trigger an eczema attack.

Finally, keep in mind that no matter what you do you cannot completely escape stress so make peace with the stress you have in your life and always keep it in perspective. Someone once said, "Don’t sweat the small stuff. It’s all small stuff.” If you can adopt way of thinking then your stress load should be reduced significantly.

Is Treating Eczema with Steroids Safe?

With eczema affecting so many different people, it is important to treat it in a myriad of different ways. Since everyone’s body is their own, there is no single approach that works for everyone. One treatment that has been developed and used widely is the application of topical steroids.

Why Steroids Help

The most common steroids used in the treatment of eczema are a class of compounds called corticosteroids. These hormones are produced naturally in the body in the adrenal cortex and take part in several physiological reactions like stress response, protein catabolism, and electrolyte levels in the blood. But specific to eczema, corticosteroids are important for the proper function of immune responses and regulating inflammation.

Many of those who suffer from eczema are treated with topical doses of different synthesized corticosteroids. Doctors and patients agree that steroid creams have the power to treat the problem effectively but are they really the right tool for the job?

Side Effects

While Corticosteroids may be effective at treating the eczema, using them definitely comes with a cost. Below we have listed some of the adverse health effects experts have associated with the use of topical steroid creams.

Liver Damage
Like almost all steroids, corticosteroids could be hell on your liver. Steroids often cause strain and damage. If you are taking some variety of corticosteroid, it may be important to take it conjunction with a supplement that supports liver health and function. One supplement ingredient worth considering would be milk thistle since this is what many bodybuilders use to protect themselves from liver damage caused by steroids. However, it may be more cost effective to try an all-natural eczema treatment that doesn’t require buying supplemental products to make it safe.

Birth Defects
One study at the University of Washington’s Department of Pediatrics showed that corticosteroids might have some teratogenic effects. These effects may seem small but they could be quite significant. The study claimed that corticosteroids could cause a multiple birth defects for every 1,000 pregnant women treated with them. This may be just around 1 percent, but we still think those odds are a little too high.

Cancer
One of the scariest side effects we researched was that using strong topical steroids could increase risk of Lymphoma. In the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, a study back in 2007 that showed that there was a significant association between patients who had been treated with topical corticosteroids, in low and high concentrations, and patients who developed lymphoma later down the line. Though only 294 cases of lymphoma occurred out of the 293,253 patients, the added risk is still scary nonetheless.

Eye Damage
One study conducted by the Retinal Research Department at the Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital in New York City, showed that corticosteroid use may be connected with central serous chorioretinopathy or CSC. This condition is characterized by the leaking of fluid under the retina that can begin to pool and collect under the central macula. This leads to distorted vision, blurry spots, and decreased visual acuity even after the fluid has drained.

Final Thoughts

With prolonged use of steroids causing harm, it may be necessary to use these topical treatments in short bursts. One study we saw published in the British Medical Journal showed that short term use of a strong topical steroid was just as effective as prolonged administrations of milder steroids for treating eczema.

In conclusion, steroids have their place when it comes to treating eczema, but that role should be limited. If you rely too heavily on them, you can experience unwanted side effects that could be worse than the initial problem you set out to treat.

Treat Your Eczema At Home

Learning to treat your eczema and gain relief at home can provide you with freedom that you may not otherwise experience. A surprising number of Eczema sufferers are realizing that the treatments they give themselves in their own home can have a much more fundamental effect in the fight to beat the condition. Scientific reports have hinted that foods with a high acidity can have direct links to Eczema. You can fix this very efficiently by visiting a dietician and getting some ideas for a new diet-but realistically, most people have neither the means or the inclination to visit a specialist dietician, so I would suggest a trip to your local health food store. Kelp supplements can most likely be found there, and they are proven to have a very high Alkali content. This alkali will neutralize the acid in your stomach from Acidic foods, and so can be a quick way to get relief. Moisturize- The more you moisturize the less bother your eczema will give you, period. For most people the dreaded itching is amongst the worse parts of being an Eczema sufferer, and a regular moisturization regime can really help eliminate that itch. The best method is to moisturize each day after your bath or shower, and lightly towel yourself dry before application. Applying the moisturizer to slightly damp skin like this will help you lock some of the moisture inside the skin, giving even greater relief. You don’t need me to tell you how much of a pain Eczema can be, but hopefully if you apply some of these tips you can find some considerable relief.

Not only will it help reduce Eczema, it will also improve the health of your skin in general. It does take a while for the results to show up, but keep at it and be consistent with your dosage and you will get there! The dosage is different for everyone, so you may want to consult with your Doctor for some medical advice first. Moisturization of the affected area- To put it bluntly, the more moisture there is in your skin, the less it can split and crack and itch and flake. This will help you lock the moisturizer into the skin, and give you even greater benefits. These are good tips in helping deal with your eczema. If you would like to cure your eczema forever, you will need a complete system designed to do so.

Controlling Eczema by Moisturizing

Keeping your skin’s moisture intact is one of the most important things you can do to help control your eczema.

Moisturizers helps protect the outermost layer of skin known as the stratum corneum or skin barrier. People living with eczema have a damaged skin barrier, which makes their skin more sensitive to irritants, allergens, bacteria and other invaders. A damaged skin barrier also make it harder for the skin to retain water, leading to chronic dry, itchy skin, which can cause eczema to flare or get worse.

Wind, low humidity, cold temperatures, harsh soaps and prolonged exposure to water, all lead to dry skin. So, it’s important to understand how and when to properly moisturize and which products are best to use when you have eczema.

Some things to remember when moisturizing:

Keeping your skin’s moisture intact is one of the most important things you can do to help control your eczema.

If you use a prescription topical medication, apply it as directed, before you moisturize.

Apply a thick layer of moisturizer all over your skin within three minutes of bathing or showering to “lock in” moisture and protect the skin barrier.

Moisturizers that are fragrance and dye-free are the safest and least irritating.

Prevent contamination by using a clean implement rather than your hands to remove moisturizer from the container.

Soften moisturizer by rubbing it between your hands and then apply it to your body using the palm, in downward strokes. Avoid rubbing in the moisturizer by stroking up and down, or in circles.

If the moisturizer feels “tacky” on your skin, don’t remove the excess. It will be absorbed within a few minutes.

Moisturize hands every time you wash them or when they come into contact with water.

Why is it so important to moisturize after a bath or shower?

Water is an effective way to put moisture back into the skin, but only if you use lukewarm (not hot) water, avoid scrubbing and apply a moisturizer within three minutes after bathing or showering. This last step very important — if you don’t moisturize immediately afterward, the moisture your skin needs will evaporate and may cause a rebound effect making the skin even more dry.

What kinds of moisturizers are most effective for my eczema?

Not all moisturizers are created equal. In fact, there are many types of common moisturizers that aren’t good at helping control your eczema and may even make it flare or get worse. It’s important to understand the differences between the three basic types of moisturizers — ointments, creams, and lotions — so that you can properly hydrate your skin and help keep your symptoms under control.

Moisturizers are classified based on the amount of oil and water they contain. The more oil in a moisturizer, the better it usually is at treating eczema. The best moisturizers to use are the ones that feel “greasy” (ointments and creams), because they contain more oil. These are very effective at keeping moisture in and irritants out.

All moisturizers should also be applied to your hands immediately after washing and gently blotting them dry. For this reason, it’s a good idea to keep moisturizer near every sink in your home and carry a small tube with you at all times, so that you can reapply it throughout the day.

Ointments

Ointments are usually the first choice for eczema treatment. They have the highest oil content of all the products (followed by creams and then lotions), so they don’t generally burn when they’re applied to sensitive skin and are very good at sealing in moisture.

Products high in oil content, such as petroleum jelly and mineral oil, are particularly good for treating eczema. But if you don’t like the way petroleum jelly, mineral oil or other ointments feels on your skin, the next best alternative is a cream.

Creams

Creams are second to ointments in the amount of oil they contain and are also very good at sealing in moisture. Because they contain less oil, they are also less greasy to the touch. Be sure to read labels carefully — creams sometimes contain stabilizers or preservatives that can irritate your skin.

Lotions

These contain the least amount of oil. Because they are primarily made of water, lotions evaporate quickly and may contain preservatives that burn when applied to skin that’s scratched or broken.

If your skin stings or burns after you apply a moisturizer, switching to an ointment may help.

Skin barrier creams

Skin barrier creams are infused with lipids and ceramides, which are naturally occurring substances found in healthy skin barriers.

Lipids make up the building blocks of the structure and function of living cells. Ceramides are naturally occurring lipids in our skin that consist of an oily wax that forms a barrier in our stratum corneum.

The lipids and ceramides found in skin barrier moisturizers form a protective layer on the skin to help lock in moisture while keeping out impurities. This allows eczema skin to heal and become more resistant to symptoms, including burning, dryness and itch.

Apply skin barrier creams only to the skin affected by eczema and under the direction of a qualified health care provider.

Skin barrier creams are available by prescription and over-the-counter.

Finding a moisturizer that works can be a challenge. What works for one person may not work for another. As the condition of your skin changes so can the effectiveness of a product. A manufacturer may also change the formulation of a product from one year to the next. The best eczema lotion, cream or moisturizer is the one that works for you.

Common Types of Eczema Reviewed

Eczema is a chronic skin condition that affects millions of Americans. Although each of these individuals is plagued with sensitive and easily irritated skin, there are different types of eczema. A few of the most common diagnoses made are outlined and briefly reviewed below.

Atopic Dermatitis

Atopic Dermatitis is the most common type of eczema. Luckily, the condition is rarely constant. Instead, those who suffer from this type of eczema experience outbreaks or flare-ups. Trigger factors, which may include certain foods and chemical irritations, are the leading cause of atopic dermatitis. Patients who determine their trigger factors and work to eliminate them tend to experience fewer and less severe flare-ups.

Contact Eczema

Atopic Dermatitis

Atopic Dermatitis is the most common type of eczema. Luckily, the condition is rarely constant. Instead, those who suffer from this type of eczema experience outbreaks or flare-ups. Trigger factors, which may include certain foods and chemical irritations, are the leading cause of atopic dermatitis. Patients who determine their trigger factors and work to eliminate them tend to experience fewer and less severe flare-ups.

Contact Eczema

Contact eczema is similar to atopic dermatitis, but it results in a localized reaction. A common cause of a contact eczema outbreak is direct skin contact with chemicals. For example, some women may experience flare-ups on their risks, hands, or face after applying makeup. Although anyone can suffer from contact eczema, those with a history of allergies are more prone.

Seborrheic Eczema

Seborrheic eczema, like other forms of the condition, is an inflammation of the skin. The skin is irritated. This eczema, however, is used to describe flare-ups and outbreaks that don’t have a cause. Many areas of the body are targeted, but the face and scalp are most commonly affected. A common example of this type of eczema is cradle cap in babies and infants.

Nummular Eczema

Although relatively rare and uncommon, nummular eczema is another type of diagnosable eczema. The most noticeable and distinguishable feature is patches of irritated skin that are coin shaped. It is a chronic condition. Allergies, family history of eczema, and asthma lead to an increased risk. While anyone can have nummular eczema, it is most common in elderly males.

There are other types of eczema that men, women, and children suffer from. Although the names are different, the treatment options are usually the same. Medical professionals recommend avoiding skin irritants, keeping the body well moisturized, and making the switch to all-natural products. For an accurate diagnosis on what type of eczema you suffer from, schedule an appointment with your healthcare provider.

Question: What is the cause of eczema?
Answer: There are many different causes. Eczema outbreaks and flare-ups happen to different people and for different reasons. Although there is no one cause for eczema, those with sensitive skin are prone. As for what can cause trigger a flare-up, it can be certain foods, certain chemicals, the weather, and stress even plays a role.

Question: Can I cure my eczema if I find the cause?
Answer: Not likely. While some individuals have one sole cause for eczema outbreaks and flare-ups, others have many. You may find yourself itching and scratching after sweating from the hot weather, after using scented body wash, or after drinking milk. Determining the cause of your uncontrollable itch and eliminating at a source will help, but you are still and may always be prone to episodes.

Question: Will my children develop eczema too?
Answer: Many adults wonder if they can pass eczema onto their children. Yes, you can. Medical professionals have determined that children with immediate family members who have atopic dermatitis are susceptible to the condition too. On that same note, there are many instances in which it is not passed down. In fact, some children develop and live with eczema, but have no prior family history.

Question: How can I treat eczema?
Answer: As stated above, there isn’t a known cause for eczema, but medical professionals are aware of trigger factors. These make eczema worse or cause a flare-up. In addition to keeping your body well moisturized, you can try to determine your trigger factors and avoid them. Keep a daily journal of your day. Document all the foods you eat, what activities you were doing, what products came into contact with your skin and so forth. Compare your journal to an outbreak.

Eczema can be difficult to treat, but it is possible to seek permanent relief. New research shows that all-natural treatment systems, such as Eczema Free Forever, are successful.

Eczema Irritants-House Dust Mite

House dust mite is a tiny insect that occurs in every home. You cannot see it without a microscope. It mainly lives in bedrooms and mattresses as part of the dust.

Many people with eczema are allergic to house dust mite. However, in general, it is not usually advised to do anything about house dust mite. This is because:

The research studies that have looked into whether reducing house dust mite is helpful have not been conclusive. There is some evidence that reducing house dust mite may help but further research is really needed to confirm this.

It is impossible to clear house dust mite completely from a home and it is hard work to greatly reduce their number to a level which may be of benefit.

Treatment with other methods such as emollients and short courses of topical steroids usually works well. Therefore, the effort of trying to eliminate house dust mite is not usually warranted.

A recent guideline from the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) - referenced at the end of this leaflet - states: "There are conflicting data on the effectiveness of using house dust mite avoidance strategies in the management of childhood atopic eczema. Many of the currently suggested techniques are time-consuming and expensive for parents/carers and it is important to establish their value."

However, some people with severe eczema which is difficult to control with the usual treatments try to clear house dust mite from their home as much as possible. Therefore, for the sake of completeness, the following gives an idea of how to clear house dust mite. But it has to be stressed, it is hard work, it is not usually recommended and the value of this is not clear.

To greatly reduce the numbers of house dust mite:

Remove carpets (where possible) from the bedroom. Avoid soft furnishing in the bedroom.

Use dust-tight ('mite-proof') covers for any mattress, duvet and pillow (a good bed retailer will be able to advise). This can be left in place for several months. The usual covers can be put on top of the special covers but should be washed every 1-2 weeks at 60°C.

Use feather rather than synthetic pillows (this is the opposite to what used to be thought).

Wet-dust the bedroom furniture every 1-2 weeks. Some people advise dusting even more frequently - even daily dusting.

Vacuum or clean the bedroom floor regularly. Use a vacuum cleaner with a good filter (this removes the mite and prevents small particles coming out through the vacuum exhaust).

Vacuum the mattress once a week.

Regularly ventilate the bedroom (open the door and a window for a while on most days).

Keep soft toys to a minimum. Put them in the freezer in a plastic bag for 24 hours now and again. This kills any mites on them. If the toys are washable, wash them at 60°C after they have been in the freezer.

Try to keep humidity low (for example, do not dry washing on the radiator). An electric blanket decreases humidity in the bed which helps to keep mite numbers down in a mattress.

Autoimmune Progesterone Eczema Related To Menstrual Cycles

Because some types of eczema are triggered by a woman's menstrual cycle, progesterone is sometimes part of the treatment plan. Many women complain of worsening acne and water retention during the menstrual cycle, but a few actually have autoimmune progesterone dermatitis (APD) a condition in which the menstrual cycle is associated with an number of skin conditions such as urticaria, eczema and others.

In affected women, the flare-ups typically occur three to ten days prior to the menstrual flow and they generally resolve two days after menstruation begins. Women with irregular menses may not have a correlation that is this clear and that can make autoimmune progesterone eczema more difficult to diagnose.

Because of the association between the menstrual cycle and eczema, progesterone creams and supplements are often used to treat the condition. Most women prefer to use supplements and creams that contain natural forms of progesterone. The amount and type of progesterone may vary from woman to woman. The regimen is closely associated with a woman's monthly hormonal changes.

In addition to hormonal changes, food allergies can play a big role in eczema. Women who suffer from autoimmune progesterone eczema should be very aware of foods that aggravate their condition and avoid those foods altogether two weeks before menstrual flow begins.

Women who suffer from this skin condition should be extremely diligent about keeping the skin moisturized, especially in the week preceding their period. Frequent moisturizing locks in the skin's own moisture to prevent dryness and cracking. One of the best ways to lock in moisture is to apply moisturizers immediately after bathing. It is also important to avoid irritating the skin by using harsh soaps or body sponges.

Irritants that can aggravate eczema include soaps, bubble baths, perfumes, cosmetic, laundry detergents, household cleaners and certain types of jewelry. Avoid personal care products that contain alcohol. Wash clothes only in hypoallergenic detergents and send them through the rinse cycle twice. Women with autoimmune progesterone eczema should wear clothes made from 100 percent cotton with no synthetic fibers. Bed linens should also be made from 100 percent cotton.

Women who are taking estrogen supplements for menopause symptoms should talk with their physicians before using natural or synthetic progesterone. Progesterone creams may increase the sensitivity of your skin to estrogen receptors. If you are taking progestin, such as Provera, you should stop using it immediately when you begin using progesterone cream. Many types of hormone replacement therapy, especially prescription strength medications, may interact adversely with progesterone.

A qualified holistic practitioner can help you decide if progesterone is the best method for treating your eczema. Autoimmune progesterone eczema has been treated successfully with natural products for many years.
